Well, it's cute, fairly well written, and has some big names behind it. Reaction images are very easy to make, and there's a lot of community support with episode distribution, fan fictions of all styles, and a lot of fan art being made (since it's a very general and easy to work with design).
Basically, why wouldn't people love it (besides it being for young girls)?

Because it's a 20 minute toy commercial.

A valid criticism. Well, not really. What makes toy lines a less acceptable source of intellectual property than, say, movies, books, video games, comic books, TV shows, Disney theme park rides, or the music of ABBA? Sure, the toy-driven cartoons from the 80's sucked, but all the cartoons from the 80's sucked. (Search your feelings. You know it to be true.) Animation has improved since then, and Hasbro has stepped up its game to keep up with the higher standards. After all, a half-hour toy commercial doesn't move any product if no one watches it. It's the same market forces that turned Transformers into a big-budget Baysplosion extravaganza, except here it's less "MICHAEL BLA BLA SPLOOM!" and more "Cartoon Cartoons."

Yes, the 80's was the worst decade for animation, and not even Seth Macfarclane or Butch Hartman have topped Filmation. FiM is okay. Just, okay. But, if this show wasn't based on an original toyline, and focused on a completely original universe and characters, would you folks really be into it as much? FiM is only good compared to the alternative. If it were shown alongside PPG, Dexter , Ed Edd & Eddy or I.M Weasel, we know what any sane child would pick (I'm only using this comparison since you brought up Cartoon Cartoons). But on the other hand, any sane child should also pick this over something like Phineas and Ferb, so I see the overall merit, being the only aesthetically pleasing cartoon we have on TV right now. Just not why some forums hail this like its the next Winsor McCay ("this is going to save good animation!"). The animation can be nicely expressive, but its flat and flash-tweeny.

I don't know if the 80's were the absolute worst. The passage of time has mercifully blocked out a lot of the crap from earlier decades. But you could definitely make a case for it.
Anyway, I just used the Cartoon Cartoon name as an example of the genre*. I won't claim that this show is better than the ones you listed (except I Am Weasel). There was a brain trust there and a level of freedom that probably won't be seen again for at least a decade, if ever. And yes, FiM is getting a bit of a pass because of the prior reputation of the MLP brand. Perception is all about contrast; we don't notice "good" and "bad," only "better" or "worse," and FiM is definitely "better." But still, both of those only mean that the show isn't as good as advertised, not that it isn't good. In the end, I think FiM will end up a lot like MLaaTR: a decent show, not great, but decent, with a lot of wasted potential that can then be harnessed by the fanbase. (And God willing, unlike MLaaTR, they'll actually do it this time.)
* The genre's technical name is "creator driven animation," and it's exactly what it sounds like. Is it ironic that the owners of an established IP are trying to capture the magic of truly original programming? Probably.

Because it's a 20 minute toy commercial. So is Gundam, but that hasn't stopped people from enjoying it.

Ugh. Sorry I said anything. It's cute, okay? And it IS one of the better cartoons out there CURRENTLY. The Phineas and Ferb comparison makes a great case for it, actually. It's something new to keep our attention instead of watching reruns of better cartoons that were cancelled years ago. And if I haven't mentioned, D'AAAAWWWWWW factor is there and it has a great community behind it. From what you guys are saying, I should maybe be grateful I was a 90s kid.

Depends. We keeping this to main cast, or are BG and one-shot ponies welcome?
My List: -Luna -Trixie -Fluttershy -Rarity -Twilight -Pinky Pie -Applejack -Dash
Not to say I hate the lower ones, just I don't like them as much as the higher ones.
It comes down to how I imagine I would relate to them and such, mostly based on personality.
inb4 I'm berated for having Dash at the bottom. She's cool, I just don't like her as much as the others.

Dash at the bottom? How cooouuuuuld you?
For me among the six, it's...
Rainbow Dash Twilight Sparkle Rarity Applejack Pinkie Pie Fluttershy
Not saying least favorite for anypony at the bottom, because I find them all likable characters. Rarity was a little lower until the latest episode.
