The Old Adam Character: 97 (Irredimable Sue)..
But then... The New Adam Character: 14 (Non Sue)
Guess getting rid of his guitar and kitanas and making him a villian went a long way.

Actually, yes. The old adam just worked as a day to day self insert, though when I abandoned my old ficverse (Shadow Souls), I decided to start anew and get rid of the character entirely, though soon I was thinking back to him. I decided to build him from the ground up again, keeping similar powers but making his own persona more of a twisted and dark character. Soon, he didn't fit as an anti-hero anymore (and the removal of the main plotpoint in the SS series also helped out since it was him fighting a global tyranny), and I thought, since after all Jenny and him were infact rivals before, he would be a villian. Though, not in the usual sense. While Jenny is essentially a vigilante if you think about it, she has her own moral code, to only defeat the bad guy and not to intimidate. He essentially, since his survival is based on harnessing energy, notably the human energy released at death (the entire AU has this weird science-oriented fantasy mythology to it), he chooses to kill and destroy criminals violently to sustain himself. Also, he believes his powers are not a curse or meerly an anonimly, he believes himself to be an evolutionary step forward from human kind (something I had as his original backstory, but brought back as a motive), leading him to believe he is above empathy for causing destruction. So, yeah, I like this one better, though it is still a shame that I can't really use him in RPs because of his villian like persona.

I'm gonna try this on a few of my characters from all universes. xD Amanda Carbunkle scored - A Mary-Sue score, and I can see why, but she's not perfect or anything (heck I based her off of ME, how perfect can that be?) But since I based her off of me, that's definitely what got in the way. We're very much alike, I use her to point out all my flaws. I don't think I can improve her any more than I already have without changing her completely. (Oh, also I forgot to add, I don't think she's TOO flawed either. She's just kind of like an average person, really.) Olive (from another fan universe) scored - Well, she got a negative 9. o____o I know it's because she has a serious addiction to violence and even carries a knife with her...xD I'm very glad she's not a Mary-Sue, she doesn't even get what she wants in the end. I'm...gonna do the rest later. Cuz I'm bored. EDIT: I redid Amanda Carbunkle, not counting any of the "does she share the same interests/name as you?" questions and she got a 2. O.o

I scored 95 (AWW S#17!!!)
This is bad, but, as far as I can tell, anyone who's read my fanfic liked Damion, so, I do not intend to change to much (although he was going to change drastically by the third part of my MLaaTR saga...)
Anyway, if you don't believe me, go and see for yourself. He may be immortal and 40x better than any human, but he's still greatly flawed, and he's starting to realize it.
Damion: You jerk...
Me: It has to happen, Damion. No one is perfect, not even a Demon.
Damion: That still gives you no right to make me suffer with developing emotion.
Me: It's either that, or I kill you.
Damion: YOU'RE GONNA KILL ME ANYWAY!!! > : (
Me: Not the point...

Man.....My First OC scored 70, although I choose to believe that he is not quite as bad as the test showed. Possible recreation may be necessary at some point, but for now, I'm rolling out with him as My Main (and only (so far)) OC.

Thomas scored 37. Not as bad as Alex.....and as before, I'm keeping him how he is. I'd like to believe he compliments and reacts well with the other personalities.

Slam & Kasey (yes, I used my cartoon duo, instead of one single character) Score: 71 There's no way a wallaby and a cockroach who are obsessed with destroying each other for no reason are Mary-Sues! =p

Slam & Kasey (yes, I used my cartoon duo, instead of one single character) Score: 71 There's no way a wallaby and a cockroach who are obsessed with destroying each other for no reason are Mary-Sues! =p That doesn't tell us much about them apart from the fact that they want to kill each other in an apparently passive-aggressive manner. On another note: I put Jakob into the test again, this time with the recent updates. Score: 12.

Oh, a Mary Sue litmus test...
...
... those are totally and completely bogus.
What truly define a Mary Sue is not mere powers. Some of the most powerful characters can be genuinely interesting.
The question is more:
-how do you portray your character? -is the character part of the story or is the story merely an excuse for the character? -is your plot consistent and believable (in its own way)?
The best example of this is a character I created who was called "Ex Lightheart". A character whose score in such tests is so high it's incredible (at least 80).
... yet, every single person with whom I used this character with, both in RPs and fics, judged her to be one of the most fascinating characters they have seen.
The key is the way you write your character ultimately more than any properties of the character. An "invincible dull hero" is as such because that the plot fail to make use of him in a genuine way. A story has to make us care for the character, understand it, and feel for it (positively or negatively).
... now that I thrown this little point around...
Decided to run two of my characters through the test, see what kind of erroneous scores I'd get (my characters tend to be balanced in ways that make Litmus tests useless) and then make up my own personnal theories as to why the test would give them such a score.
EX ZX-106 P-001 "Ex Lightheart" (main protagonist of a past mega-crossover of mine) Score: 80+
Doesn't surprise me. Power level and nature make her score in those tests explode (nevermind that she was specifically designed to be a balanced character who would grow at the same time as whoever she travel with, allowing her to be both an interesting stand-alone character without hijacking other characters' roles).
XJ-9 A-106 "Claudia" (RP character for the "My Life as a Teenage Robot" setting) Score: 37
This score amuse me as Claudia is actually an underpowered character (in RPs taking place in the present, she is a mass-produced model and thus, is far below the original XJ-9 in terms of power. In the future, well... she's obsolete so it's obvious why she's still underpowered). In my opinion, it must be the "special-ness" of the character that boost its score in the test.

Post by Jessie Winkler on Jul 14, 2009 6:11:42 GMT -4
My new score for Jessie is... 97. Ouch. Any tips on revising my character? Here's what I answered yes to: Is the character named after you (this includes your first, middle, and last names, and any nicknames or online names you use)? (I used the name Jessie before I used the character Jessie) Is the character highly attractive only through her/his concerted effort? (She dressed up for the dance in Tremorton Valentines) Are one or more other characters attracted to her/him? (I'd sure HOPE Zero is. They're dating, after all) Does the character have unusual or exceptional hair, or does her/his hair get a disproportionate amount of description compared to that of the other characters? (I need to start just saying her hair is "light brown" or better yet, "red") Is the character a fashion plate (this applies to any style of dress, from preppie to goth to Western to Elvish, and so on)? (I guess you can say that. She never really switches styles) Does the character dress in a manner you find particularly attractive, sexy, or cool? (I like how she dresses. Her style is based on mine) Is the character a minority, a woman, or a member of a lower caste, who succeeds or makes a contribution in spite of her/his social disadvantage? (She gets teased a lot at school, but ends up saving their butts) Does the character ever easily learn a difficult skill (e.g. learn to play guitar in a matter of weeks)? (Some of her powers she masters easily) Has the character ever fairly lost in any kind of duel, fight, or competition against someone of equal or lesser ability, where the winner was not the character's rival? (Jenny could totally kick her butt) Does the character play a musical instrument well? Is it piano? (I just added this to my character. It's her hobby) Does the character "just know things"?(She thinks something's wrong with someone) Does the character have a major quirk or habit in common with you (e.g. drinks the same brand of soda as you, talks to pets the same way you do, etc.)? (The way she talks is similar to me) Do animals or children instinctively like the character? (Kids like her since she's similar to them and friendly) Does the character have a significant personality flaw (e.g. she/he is a spoiled brat, is horribly judgmental or biased, is irrationally violent, is naive and easily manipulated, etc.)? (She can be obsessed with people's safety *coughJaneandZerocough*) Does this flaw get the character in serious trouble (e.g. she/he gets fired, gets killed, gets someone else hurt, etc.)? (It almost gets Zero killed if I remember) Does the character have wings (this counts even if she/he is an angel, only has wings sometimes, can't fly, etc.) (Well, rocket wings, but still wings) Is the character, or was she/he ever a hero? (But of course! ) Does the character possesses the following skills, with or without the aid of charms, spells, etc.): Flight Super strength or speed Skill in martial arts or hand-to-hand combat
Are these skills considered normal in your universe? (Jenny has these, right?) Does the character share more than one of your hobbies or interests? (She has almost all of my hobbies) And is she/he better at these hobbies or more knowledgeable about these interests than you are? (Piano, but that's it) Does the character excel in a field you wish you excelled in? (Piano again) Does the character have the same taste in music as you have? (We both like pop) In movies? (We both like cartoons) Does the character have what you consider better or more refined taste than you have in movies? (I'm a general comedy person, she's more romantic comedy) Does the character have the same religious or spiritual beliefs as you? (She's Christian, but not as strong about her religion as I am) Is the character a crossbreed of species (e.g. half-vampire, half-demon, etc.)? (Human/Robot hybrid, and it's not changing) And does the she/he have the benefits of both species? (The normal looks of a human, the powers of a robot) Is the character bullied for her/his sexual orientation, skin color, intelligence, poverty/wealth, looks, clothes, background, etc.? (Mainly clothes and looks, but also some of her interests) Has everyone significant heard of the character? (Most meet her by other characters) Is the character repeatedly rivalled by the same person? (I'm calling out The Cluster on this. They hate her because she's a hybrid, thus giving robots a bad name) Do the character's problems continue after the end of your story without hope of respite (i.e. she/he neither dies nor gets a happy ending)? (Some still don't like her) Has the character ever been nursed back to health from serious injuries by a warm, kind, and loving person? (People saved her from passing out various times) Was this person the character's love interest? (Normally it was Zero) Do you draw the character, or ask other people to draw her/him for you, more often than any of your other characters? (Sketchy/Zero, can you draw Jessie for me PLEASE?!?) Did you base the character on your favorite previously existing character or person? (Jenny) Is the character someone you would want to be friends with, assuming she/he would be receptive to friendship with you?Is the character a mouthpiece for your own beliefs or views? (Most of the time) Do you have a character journal for her/him? (I have one for all my characters, thank you very much) Do you ever wish you could be like the character? (She's more confident than I am)

It really depends on HOW you use the character. The test is not a rigid absolute, it's just a guide.
You've used her here long enough to develop her into the character we are used to now, so I don't think any changes really need to be made.
