Catching a ride onto the waves we call time,
You can ride all the way to a promised land, but
The limits are limitless,
so just jump right over!
CLIMAX JUMP!!!
I've wanted to talk about this one for a LONG time.
Behold Kamen Rider Den-0, arguably one of the most popular (CERTAINLY the most successful) Kamen Rider yet. Sporting a full 48-episode season, FIVE movies (several of which are still in the works), and an extremely low-budget animated short series.
But what makes this rider so special from all the others? Kamen Rider Decade is the most powerful of all Riders, being able to not only summon and combine with past riders but also able to destroy entire worlds; so why not him? Kamen Rider J is gargantuan, so why isn't he in the spotlight?
Well, the main part is the cast of literally/figuratively colorful characters, each with a unique and badass catchphrase and a personality to match. At first glance, these characters aren't something so new to warrant FIVE movies, but the show really developed these characters well, and makes them as endearing as Boo from Monsters Inc. despite their *ahem* unsightly appearance.
(Oh, the little girl's endearing too, but she never does any of the fighting.)
It's also important to note that this series wasn't particularly dark, unlike most other Riders. Instead, Den-0 focuses on the comedic side of Kamen Rider, the jokes mostly consisting of character banter. At the same time, this banter helps develop the story, develop the characters, and make them very likable.
Den-0 was my first Kamen Rider, and it gave me a great first impression and made me stay for the rest of the series and then some. Sure, it's not the best Rider, but that doesn't mean it's not a good one. It may be rough, but in the end you'll know that you had some laughs riding the wave of time to the promised land...
"Ore SANJOU!! *pose*"
-Momotaros
"Mind if I string you along?"
-Urataros
"My strength will make you cry, so wipe your tears with THIS!!"
-Kintaros
"I'm gonna blow you up, 'kay?"
-Ryuutaros
