I know of the character, but have never watched the show. The closest I've ever seen to anything like him is Jet Jaguar from Godzilla VS Megalon.

I got the DVD of that series. Guy becomes big to fight monsters to defend the city. He works for a monster defense team.

Ultraman is the creation of Eiji Tsubaraya, one of the original co-creators of Godzilla, when he wanted to create a kid-friendly hero while still keeping Godzilla a symbol of dreaded nuclear destruction as he was originally intended.
Ultraman is actually the sequel show to a series called Ultra-Q, which is a mix between Power-Rangers and the Twilight Zone, in which an organization investigates unexplained phenomena that usually leads to a giant monster attack. Many of the monsters from Ultra-Q reappear throughout the Ultraman series.
Ultraman still has the investigation team, but this time with the addition of a titular Ultraman. While the investigation team has tools and weapons that help them combat the monsters, Ultraman is usually the only one strong enough to defeat them.
Ultraman is a bit different than your typical superhero. In addition to the ability to grow in size, Ultraman is actually a fusion between an alien being and a human being, remaining in human form and using a special item to transform. Ultraman's most fatal weakness is no doubt his color-timer. Often because of Earth's polluted atmosphere, Ultraman can only exist in his giant form for a maximum of three minutes. If he remains a giant after the three minutes are up, both he and his human host die. The color-timer on his chest indicates when there is only one minute left by flashing red and beeping.
While the Ultra series has changed quite a lot over the years, what Ultraman symbolizes hasn't changed. And that is that there will always be hope. To never give up on your hopes and dreams no matter how slim your chances are.
