It was a usual day in Tremorton. Which means local superhero Jenny “XJ-9” Wakeman was busy stopping an alien invasion before school and had to fight off a mutated squid during lunch period. All while enduring the constant mocking from other kids, especially when her teacher called her out.
“Ms. Wakeman, would you please clean yourself off?” The teacher said, “Those tentacles are making a mess and disturbing the class.” He wrote up a hall pass for Jenny.
“Yes, Mister Scott…” Jenny sulked, walking to grab the hall pass when Brit Krust made a passing comment.
“Be sure to get that especially unsightly stain on your head, darling,” Brit whispered mockingly, “Oh wait, that’s your face.” The other girls sitting next to her started to giggle amongst themselves, amplifying Brit’s confident smirk and Jenny’s fuming grimace. Jenny had to stand there and take it, though. She always stood there and took it.
“What’s up, Jen?” Brad greeted Jenny in the hallway.
“Oh, hi Brad,” Jenny waved halfheartedly.
“What, you’re not gonna ask what I’m doing in the hallway? It’s ‘cause I got Hall monitor duty, which means you and I get free reign—Jenny?” Brad tilted his brow. Jenny let out a sigh. “Is the grind getting to you again?”
“Yeah…” Jenny’s pigtails drooped forward, “I save everyone’s lives almost every day from monsters, aliens, secret agents, what have you, and none of them are thankful for it!”
“I guess that’s BECAUSE it happens every day,” Brad shrugged, “You can only scream you lungs off so much before it starts getting old.”
“But why is nobody thankful when it’s over?” Jenny could almost scream with frustration, “Sure, they cheer at first, but the next literal minute it’s just ‘oh, look at the tin can’ or ‘hey, it’s the trash can that trashed the school!’ It’s not even that it’s easy or boring, they always come at me with everything they’ve got and I ALWAYS have to fight them alone!”
“Come on, Jen, you got superhero friends,” Brad patted Jenny on the shoulder, counting them off on his fingers. “You’ve got the Silver Shell, Misty, the Teen Team, Melody…”
“The Silver Shell’s a psychotic jerk, Misty went mercenary and tried to kill me, the Teen Team disbanded and left to their own galaxies, and I chased off Melody,” Jenny countered, stopping Brad in his tracks, “Let’s face it, I’m always going to be alone in this fight…”
“Aw come on, what about me?” Brad gestured to himself, “What evildoer could take the Bradster?” Brad flexed his muscles, which was hard for even Jenny’s microscope eyes to see.
“All of them,” Jenny deadpanned, “You even lost an arm-wrestling match to the Lancer. Without his suit.”
“Hey, you saw what he was doing, he cheated!” Brad tried to counter, but Jenny ignored him as she went to the girl’s room and roasted the tentacles that still clung to her. After washing off the ash at the sink, Jenny looked into the mirror and let out a wistful sigh.
“Face it, Jenny. You’re alone in this fight, and nobody will thank you for it…” Jenny walked back to class and waited for the day to end. That’s the best she could hope for.
