Unrequited

"Why do you feel like that?" "I... think you were forced to choose me."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Purple streaks in her wake, Jessie Winkler was enjoying an evening flight. The half-human, half-robot hybrid found out that flying was her favorite part of her new powers. Well, not so new anymore. After all, she had them for the past couple of months, and thought for the longest time that the only one that could understand her new form was her sister Jane, who also had the upgrade installed.
But then she found another.
XJ-0, also known as Zero.
They started as acquaintances, then turned into best friends, and eventually fell in love. They were currently in what would hopefully be a long relationship. Zero made her think of better things, thoughts that made her happy.
Like their first kiss.
Her heart fluttered just thinking about it.
He said that he loved her. He really did.
And then it just... happened.
There was really no way to describe it.
His lips brushed hers, and she kissed him back. She couldn't feel it in her robot form, but it was still a thrill to her. Even when he backed away, he let her rest in his arms.
Yep, she thought to herself. This is going to be a great relationship.
But lately, Jessie was thinking differently about the situation. What if he didn't really mean it? What if she was just the second choice? After all, he did love another at one point. A full-blood human, not some creepy hybrid like Jessie was.
Iris.
Just the name made the purple one's fluids boil.
That was the worst time of her life. She cried over him, choosing Iris over her. Jessie had a bad feeling about the other girl. She was right. Iris broke Zero's heart, and almost destroyed the planet.
If Jessie wasn't there in time to save him...
Well, she prefers not to think about that.
But it made her wonder. What if Iris didn't die? What if Zero didn't know about Iris' true calling?
...Would he still be in love with her? Was Jessie just a replacement?
Who am I kidding? He doesn't really love me, Jessie thought, breaking in the middle of the sidewalk.
On the other side of the street, Zero was walking with supplies for his base, when he saw her. "Hi Jessie!" he shouted, waving with his free hand. But she didn't respond. He flew over the cars in order to reach her.
"...Jessie? Why didn't you say anything?" he asked, worried.
"Just forget about me," the girl told him.
Ignoring the request, he sat down in front of her, looking down at her robonizer. "May I?"
"Uh... sure, I guess?"
Zero pushed the de-robonize button, transforming Jessie back to a human.
"Thanks. I just like you a lot more in your human form. I don't have to worry about you getting hurt." He moved his hand toward her face, but she quickly swatted it away.
"Stop it."
"...What's wrong with you?" the robot asked gently.
"You know darn right what's wrong, Zero. You broke my heart."
"What?!?" Zero backed away a little, confused. What did I do?"
"You liked Iris," his girlfriend told him, glaring daggers.
The boy sighed and moved closer to her. "I LIKED her, yes. But then I realized what kind of person she was. I like you now, Jess." Zero tried to put an arm around her, but she pushed it away.
"If Iris was here, you'd still be in love with her," Jessie simply stated. "She would be your girlfriend right now, not me."
"Why do you feel like that?"
"I... I think you were forced to choose me." She couldn't finish her statement because she starting crying again.
Zero could only gently gaze at her. "Oh Jess," he whispered, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her into his lap. Surprisingly enough, she actually accepted it.
"I'm sorry, I just... am still jealous," the girl cried into his shoulder. "But now that she's dead... I don't know what to feel. I just feel like the second choice, that you're only nice to me because you have to be."
He hugged her tighter. "Jessie... you don't know how far from the truth that is. I mean, I cared for Iris, but not nearly as much as I care about you."
The young girl looked up at him, and the older boy guessed that was his cue to continue. "The truth is... I was only attracted to Iris because she kissed me on the cheek. We didn't have anything in common. And we just couldn't trust each other. But I couldn't figure that out on my own. My own father... he even thought it was wrong. I was clouded; my feelings were mixed up. But you helped me understand what real love is."
The robot boy cupped her head in his hands. "Why would you think I'm forced to choose you," he told her simply, "When you're the one I want?"
Zero leaned in closer, and Jessie filled the distance eagerly until their lips made contact.
To Jessie, her second kiss was the same as her first one, but completely different at the same time. It was Jessie's first kiss in her human form, so she could feel his cold metal lips on hers, chilling her to the core.
Her boyfriend parted soon after, though earlier than she wanted him to. Unsure of what to say, Zero folded some of her hair behind her ear.
That's when he came up with an idea.
"I'll pay you back for this, Jess. I promise," he said, taking her hand.
"But in the meantime, follow me."

Author's Note: Tell me what you think. A sequel will show exactly where Jessie's "following" him to, with a special guest! Also, in case you're wondering, this is when he first comes up with the idea to give her the flower in "Soul Crisis".
