As Jakob headed to the city, the ground got lower and lower below the water level. The Bunker was on an elevated area compared to the rest of the city, so it happened to be at that sweet spot right before the shoreline began. The android wondered how troublesome it’d have been if he opened the door while the water level was higher.
Judging by the time of day- the position of the sun- the ocean would currently be in the high tide period. That was especially fortunate, but did not lighten his mood much when his pants and jacket began to soak up water. The added weight was not terribly much for an android, but it was a noticeable difference nonetheless.
On closer inspection, the remains of many buildings were covered in coral and dying-out ocean life. The evidence indicated a far worse flood had happened while Jakob was in stasis. He paused close to one building. The sign was completely devoid of colour, and dead mollusks covered most of it, but the vague cat shape was unmistakable. Jakob had the feeling that the owner was long gone.
The Chinese restaurant that he and KPG often ordered from was also in barely recognizable shambles. Between the floodwaters reaching waist-height and the coral, there was nothing here that could house a human being.
Jakob had to call it, Tremorton was dead, drowned, and the cadaver had only resurfaced after… years… He had been asleep for years. How many years? His internal clock was out of sync, so it had to be many…
Jakob entered the restaurant. He kept his pistol elevated over the water as he passed by an eerily empty dining area. The only intact objects he could find are barely whole, utterly rusted utensils.
There was, however, a vault. It was covered in rust, but it appeared far more solid than most everything. Jakob’s pistol hand phased back into the void, then returned without the pistol- effectively putting the firearm away. With both hands free, Jakob gripped at the vault and pulled.
It gave out shockingly easily, but whatever was within the vault would have been incredibly soggy, as water splashed out. Evidently the vault was faulty.
Regardless, he carefully reached inside to sift through the contents. “Come on… something… anything…”
He found a hard drive, covered in salt water. Jakob had half a mind to toss it into the flood waters, but… who knows? Maybe something survived on the drive? The chances of that were a trillion to one, but it wasn’t like Jakob could lose anything by trying. He’s already lost everything.
He pulled the hard drive into the void, and continued searching. Eventually he found a gloss-covered sheet of paper. The paper had seen better days, but the words were shockingly still legible. It contained a list of recipes.
“Wow, I’ve always wanted their secrets,” Jakob smirked as he pulled the recipe into the void as well.
